Man Vs Machine - Maxon

We worked in conjunction with the Man vs Machine team as part of a competition set by Maxon, the makers of Cinema 4D. We were asked to scan taxidermy animals for use in their project; an owl and a fox. The owl was both beautiful and striking with very delicate feathers, being translucent in places with his wings stretched out. This made scanning difficult, but using some top secret techniques we were able to do it!

Scanning the fox also had it's potential difficulties, especially with the animal's fluffy tail and the fact the teeth and gums were required. We used our full-body rig which was reconfigured to maximise the relatively small volume required by the animals. This allowed us to spend time setting up and utilising the data captured from over 100 cameras, all carefully lined up to achieve the desired results. The many hours of setup, and methodical approach paid off; the resulting scans were impressive, providing MvM with fully textured assets that were incorporated into their CG scene, as well as providing excellent reference for body form, texture and pose.
