Lost in Space
Our brief on Lost in Space was entirely a technical one. For a
large part of the movie the cast are seen wearing their cryo suits,
which are used to create the look of a life support garment worn
during suspended animation.
The costume designer used a skin tight garment incorporating small
fibre optic point light sources to give a high tech look.
The difficulty was to provide power for the lights and a remote
control system for turning each suit's lights on and off without
creating any new lumps in the skin tight garments. The solution
was to conceal small, powerful battery packs in the suit's illuminated
panels, along with a miniature radio controlled switch. Each switch
could be programmed with its own unique digital signature and
allow our on set crew to turn individual suits lights on and off
remotely as required, thus conserving batteries with a minimum
of inconvenience to the artists.
